Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

• Non-invasive: No surgery or cutting is required.
• Fewer cognitive side effects: Unlike electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), TMS has little to no concern for cognitive side effects like memory loss.
• Safety: It is considered safe and effective, with the most likely serious side effect (seizures) being extremely rare.
• Other side effects: Other side effects are typically mild and can include headaches, scalp pain, or dizziness. 

• A machine generates a magnetic field by passing an electric current through a coil.
• The coil, placed on the scalp, delivers magnetic pulses to a specific area of the brain.
• These pulses induce an electric current in the nerve cells below, which can excite or inhibit them.
• For depression, this stimulation targets the parts of the brain involved in mood regulation, helping to improve symptoms.
